If you're looking to treat your crops without damaging them, and remain comfortable while driving, you're going to have to know whether a standard tyre or narrow tyre is better for your tractor-mounted sprayer.

Tractor with sprayerYou'll generally find that you'll have a more comfortable drive using standard tyres than conventional narrow tyres. This is because standard tyres have a greater contact surface area with the ground, meaning they're better at absorbing shocks and vibrations that would otherwise be felt by the tractor driver.

Another consideration is that, in order to preserve farmland, big and heavy sprayers need strong tyres that can adequately distribute the weight of the machine on the ground and thus prevent soil compaction. However, in spring when the crops are growing, it's no longer possible for standard tyres to fit between the rows of most crops.

Narrow tyres are therefore necessary to avoid damaging your crops

Is there a way to enjoy the benefits of standard tyres (comfort and traction) with a narrow tyre?

Some narrow tyres that have been specially designed for sprayers are equipped with technology that increases their footprint and improves driver comfort. These are VF tyres or steel belted tyres.

Narrow tyres that incorporate these technologies provide maximum topsoil protection by preventing compaction. They are also able to bear heavier loads than standard tyres, and improve the stability and comfort of using sprayers.
